Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister and Tourism Department head Pravati Parida, officially inaugurated the five-day festival. The ceremonial lamp-lighting symbolized the start of this grand celebration, showcasing Odisha's rich heritage and artistic excellence.
The Konark Dance Festival, staged against the backdrop of the iconic Sun Temple, celebrates India's classical dance traditions. The inaugural evening featured a captivating Odissi performance by Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya, Bhubaneswar. Beginning with a soulful invocation to Lord Jagannath, inspired by Adi Shankaracharya’s Sri Jagannath Astakam, the recital transitioned into Bhavranga and Shakti. These segments depicted the divine energy of Lord Shiva embodied in Shakti, the feminine force. The performance was choreographed by Guru Lingaraj Pradhan and Guru Pankaj Kumar Pradhan, with music composed by Bijay Kumar Jena and Bijay Kumar Barik, offering the audience a spiritually enriching experience.
The evening continued with a Kathak recital by Malti Shyam and her troupe from New Delhi. Their presentation, Nartan Manjari, celebrated the eternal bond between the divine and devotees, blending intricate rhythms and fluid movements. Choreographed by Malti Shyam, the performance highlighted the beauty and depth of Kathak as a storytelling medium.
Simultaneously, the 14th International Sand Art Festival transformed the scenic Chandrabhaga Beach into a vibrant canvas of creativity. This year, the festival features 129 sand artists, including eight international participants from countries such as the UK, Mexico, Germany, Japan, Russia, Portugal, Spain, and Sri Lanka.
The sand sculptures explored diverse themes, including women empowerment, Odia asmita (pride), and world heritage and monuments. Artists from seven Indian states, including Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh, joined their counterparts from Odisha to craft 35 stunning masterpieces.
These parallel festivals celebrate Odisha’s artistic legacy and cultural identity. They draw tourists from around the world, offering a unique opportunity to experience the state’s heritage through dance and sand art. For wider accessibility, the Konark Dance Festival is being live-streamed on Odisha Tourism’s social media platforms and telecast on DD Bharati from December 1 to 5.
